I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag...

I can’t say that I remember celebrating Flag Day in years past, but this year I’m glad we did.  We had the honor of watching a C35 Stallion military helicopter land just yards away.

It was pretty amazing...and a good reminder that we were lucky to be watching from the peaceful hillside of a beautiful park full of kids, families and freedom, and not a war zone surrounded by violence and danger.

The kids even got to watch the local news cover the event.  I think Chase (in front of Garrett) thought he was next in line to be on camera.
Ready for take off.

Blake in the cock pit trying to figure out how the heck they fly this thing.
We also got to hang with cousins for a while and enjoy our afternoon enjoying the freedom of play.  To be followed by the freedom of a good night’s sleep.

Welcome to summer!

"Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans..."

Aint that the truth.  Life has been busy and happening all over the place over the last couple months.  Here is my best catch-up-nutshell version of our crazy life...

We survived yet another tax season.  Are they getting harder or are we just getting older?  Or both?  The good news is that I'm looking forward to that post-labor amnesia that should be kicking in any day now where looking back "it wasn't that bad...".  The GREAT news is that Brian really likes his job.  And, really, life is too short not to.

Blake earned his yellow belt in karate, way to go, Blake!

Of course now it's getting harder and he hasn't totally committed to practicing, but I'm hoping the hitting and kicking techniques will change his mind (so long as he doesn't practice those on his siblings).  When he's not going kung foo, Blake is putting his new pocket knife to use following his  recent Cub Scouts refresher on whittling.  He's so proud, what do you think of his fish?

Note: whittling a small bar of soap takes a lot of- okay, too much- focus and patience for a group of excited third grade boys.

We also learned how to ski Southern California style- on grass, of course!
It actually turned out to be a really good team building exercise with Scouts that ended up being very akin to rowing.  And I'm happy to report that Blake seems to finally be doing much better in school...now that it's May.  No doubt he's looking forward to summer and more fort building (he actually builds rooms in his forts!).

Garrett has continued to amaze us with his unique and original Lego creations.
This is the "graveyard" he built complete with headstones, a "creepy" tree, spider web and spider.

Watching Garrett construct this sphinx was pretty amazing- he new exactly what piece needed and where to put it.  He built his in under 5 minutes.
It seems like daily that he comes up with something new.  I can't wait to see what he comes up with at Lego camp this summer...should be interesting.  While I'm still trying to wrap my brain around him turning eight, Garrett has managed to finagle three family birthday celebrations and a friend party next month.  This kid is going to be a millionaire someday...  These days he's added another Character Counts wristband to his collection after being rewarded at school for turning in money he found on the playground.
Does this nullify the Character Violation he got earlier that week?

Chase is still a bigger version of his sweet and loving self.  He's become quite the talker these days and goes from 0 to frustrated in about .01 seconds...patience is not this child's virtue.  But, fortunately, being too darn cute is.  And so are compassion, affection and cuddling.  Yeah, he's pretty irresistible.  He's also become quite the little dancer/singer.  Here are his moves to Michael Jackson's "Beat It".

Otherwise, his biggest challenge right now is trying to be "one of the 'big' boys" when his body is only three (which doesn't help his frustration).

Ella got her first hair cut!  Yes, while Chase has had more than we can count, we've been holding out on getting Ella's haircut so she could have long hair.  And now that she does, she wants it cut "like a boy".  The compromise was just a trim, which turned out much better than I was anticipating considering that she was growling at the stylist the entire time.

She even got a style (something I'm strictly prohibited from going).  In the end she walked away with a "Jedi" braid- the one and only time, I'm sure.

She has also become quite enthused with drawing.  Here is the first official drawing that is recognizable to others- can you guess what it is?
It's kind of hard to see, but according to Ella it's a spider.
Now if I could just harness that creativity exclusively to paper...
And, of course, she is still dressing up (and undressing) Ella-style constantly.

Here's one of the coolest things about preschool- the twins got to celebrate their "special day" at school, where they celebrate non-school birthdays.  They were super proud to have Aunt Renee come to read a few of their favorite books.

Aimee.  My updates are a little less exciting...I'm still running about 20 miles a week, which is good considering I discovered cake pops (and really wish I hadn't)!
Other than keeping up with family, I've been working a little less and am promising myself I will make time to write more.  Summer is just around the corner and I'm ready- or at least armed- with workbooks, summer camps and sunscreen.

Easter was low-key this year.  Mostly because we had been too busy to plan much more than an egg hunt and a totally nontraditional (but easy) lasagna dinner.  I really need to talk to the Easter bunny about rescheduling Easter for AFTER tax season.  Just as well- we went light on the egg hunt too, since I had already eaten most of the candy.

Mother's Day was also low-key (the theme around here when things get crazy).  And, you really can't go wrong with a massage to celebrate.
This was the Mother's Day Tea at the twin's preschool where the kids in the class created the menu for the moms.  This year it was chicken noodle soup, lemonade and chocolate ice cream.  Yum? What I love about that is that they are all comfort foods, which tells me the kids love the comfort of mom!

Then there was the hailstorm of '12.  We had a few days of cold rain and hail- so much so that it accumulated just enough to make ONE snow/iceball.  By the next weekend it was 80 degrees, so that was our winter and then we were into spring.  It was fun while it lasted.

One of the coolest things about San Diego is "Free Tuesdays" at Balboa Park.  On this day we went with Nana to the Natural History Museum to see the dinosaurs (of course) and then went to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center where the kids got to explore for hours.  A portion of the upstairs was dedicated to stick building- whatever you can imagine and build!  We all had fun building masterpieces (and learning about physics...).

Over Spring Break the kids and I got to visit with John, Jen, Patrick and Jessica, who we haven't seen in almost eight years!  What a great time (minus the stomach bug that knocked a few of us down), and how fun to be grown ups and reminisce about childhood!  It was especially fun getting to know Patrick and Jessica a little better- what sweet kids (which is strange to call them, since they are both taller than me and twice as big since the last time I saw them).

Speaking of family, we recently had the privilege of hosting a family of House Wrens in the birdhouse the boys made with Grandpa a few years back.  Blake was the first to notice it, but I was doubtful because I thought the hole was too small.  Turns out, it was just the right size for a small bird and perfect shelter for a nest!

In fact, we've had quite a variety of birds hanging out at our house lately- a Scrub Jay that waits on our patio for bread crumbs, a Coopers Hawk and a Redtail Hawk that consider our yard prime hunting grounds, hummingbirds that keep checking back to see if we've refilled our feeders, and a woodpecker that can be heard and seen poking at the neighbors' trees.  Blake even did his school presentation on birds- and a special thanks to Aunt Nee Nee for helping him!

And in the midst of it all, we moved Penny/Grandma & David/Grandpa in early March to be closer to us.  The move was all that Penny had talked about wanting for years, and we were able to spend a little more time with her in the last month.  Sadly she passed away just a few weeks after moving here (more on that in another post) and we think about and miss her often.

The good news is that this summer is promising to be unforgettable!  The boys are really looking forward to fishing and bird watching with Grandpa, going to Lego, Lasertag and rock climbing camps, and hopefully spending most other days in their bathing suits (literally, not metaphorically, although nothing would surprise me in this house).  Chase & Ella will hopefully be taking swim lessons and tumbling.  And I'm just hoping to keep my sanity :)

Scooting, Skating, Shooting and Scheming...

And lots and lots of sparkles!  That pretty much sums up Christmas 2011.  The twins finally got the scooters from their third birthdays (just in time, too, since they are just pounds away from the weight limit- oops).  Garrett got a skateboard, Blake a pogo stick.  Garrett has yet to conquer the skateboard but thinks he looks pretty cool.  Blake picked up the pogo stick and didn't put it down until he'd mastered it.  For all the kids (and grownups) we bought a basketball hoop for the driveway.  Have you noticed the theme yet....?  We are up to our eyeballs in toys, so we decided that it was a much better investment for all our sake to gift things that were for outside use and that promoted anything but sitting in front of the computer/iPod.  And just in time for winter break!  The only down side is that I lost my prime parking spot (either that or the minivan serves as a sideboard), but it's nice to see the neighborhood boys congregating in front shooting hoops.

I think someone just got caught eating the cookie decorations...

Our Christmas eve tradition of new pj's and a Christmas movie.

If the big boys are doing it, he's in!

If Ella had her way, she'd be riding a motorcycle instead of a scooter.

Love Blake's reaction to finding out that they were getting a basketball hoop for the driveway!

Christmas was nice but felt a little rushed this year.  In part, because it wasn't as well planned out...and in part, because life is just moving WAY too fast.  The twins kind of "get" the whole Santa thing- not because I was crazy enough to take them to a crowded mall and torture them with pictures- but from the dozen Christmas movies we bought to try bring the excitement home.  And it wouldn't be the same without Christmas cookies, a midnight gift wrapping session and gorging on all the holiday favorite foods.  Everyone seemed pretty content with their gifts, and I was lucky enough to be spoiled by my boys- not one, but TWO (faux) gold rings bought just for me by Blake and Garrett who were too excited to wait until Christmas day to give them to me.  There is no better gift than to see your children filled with excitement about giving (except for being the recipient of their thoughtfulness and generosity).  But they are lucky to have an outstanding role model for a father...in spite of his scheming.  I'll save that for the next post.  Here's a hint: it sparkles!

Decorations Are Not Toys....Or Are They?

A recurring conversation with mom:

Mommy, Chasey want the big brown pider (spider).
Oh, Chasey, that spider's not for playing with, it's a Halloween decoration.
But, I want to pay (play) wif it.
I understand, Chase, but we don't play with decorations; decorations are for looking at not, not for playing with.
Ohhrrgg,  but whhhhyyyyy?
Because if you play with with it, it might break and then we don't have a Halloween spider to decorate with anymore.
But I wealllly want to pay wif it!
I know, Chase, but it's not for playing with, it's for looking at- it's just a decoration.
But whhhyyyy?
I just told you, it's a decoration, not a toy.
But Chasey want to pay wif it.
I know, Chase, but it's not for playing with, it's just for looking at.
But whhhyyyy?
Remember, it's a decoration, we don't play with decorations.
But whhhyyy?
Because they are not made to be played with and can break, then we won't have spider decoration for Halloween.
But Chasey weallly want to pay wif it.
I know, but....

Yes, this conversation has happened over and over and over since Halloween.  It doesn't end until I lose my patience, tell him, "because I said so" at which point he breaks down crying.  Someday he'll understand that driving mom crazy isn't good for either of us.

Which is why there's dad.  Here's how the conversation goes with dad:

Dad, Chasey weallly want to pay wif the big Halloween pider.
Okay.

Problem solved.  So, we now have a giant spider placed strategically around our house, depending on Chase's activity.  And don't even think about accidentally stepping on it or knocking it over or you will hear Chase shrill followed by an all-out meltdown about the spider being moved.  I guess it could be worse (right?).

Where Did October Go?

What happens when you combine all the fall's activities like soccer (with two different teams), Cub Scouts (with two different dens), the final weeks of tax season, holidays and a new job?  Well, I can tell you what DOESN'T happen...family blogging!

It's not that I haven't been blogging, but it's part of my new paid gig (kind of, read on).  And, unfortunately for my family, I find that the more I write, the more I want to write.  It's like unlocking almost nine years of not being able to complete a sentence.  I keep trying to remind them that they are lucky that I have a computer and that they aren't forced to listen to me ramble on for hours, but they aren't buying it.  It's just nice to feel useful in a non-child-serving capacity.

So, on to our family fun.

CAMPING AT INDIAN HILLS
October started off with the annual Cub Scouts camping trip to Indian Hills.  This is the site with the ultimate playground, zip line, archery, night hiking, panning for gold and mine exploration, enormous boulders for climbing, a bmx bike track and pretty much every fun and dangerous activity a school-aged boy could want to do.  Only a couple injuries incurred, but nothing serious.  Besides, Garrett's teeth were already loose.

My miner hard at work.  This kid is gonna find gold if he can't make it himself.

Unlike last year, Garrett had no fear of the zip line this year.  He must have forgotten about last year's Lego bribe.

HALLOWEEN
We skipped the expensive pumpkin patch as a family this year and went budget at Walmart.  The best part is that the kids didn't seem to miss it (and we saved ourselves a bundle on overpriced pumpkins and carnival rides, not to mention junk food and meltdowns).  All the kids really cared about is getting the pumpkins carved.
My future surgeon.

And his sister that wouldn't even get close to the slimy pumpkin seeds.
The final product: A Pokemon character (not sure which one, the names all sound the same to me), a ghost, a bat, and...

...a spider.  Thanks to Dad and Nee Nee for doing the dirty work.  Now I know why they invented pumpkin beer.
Of course, it wouldn't be Halloween if we didn't have our yard decorated (gotta love the quick and easy spider webs).  And it wouldn't be a holiday with Aunt Renee without some sort of craft.  These are the bats, ghosts and spiders she made with the twins.

But, really, it's about the costumes and the candy.  And the cousins.

I think it's entirely possible that Mark (cousin) enjoys scaring people a little too much.
And the twins loved getting up close to the decorations almost as much as getting the candy.

I figure this is the last year I can get away with taking all my favorite candy from the twins.

He's not just being silly...he really is THIS excited about his mound of candy.

We had some other fun too, like Blake's field trip to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center (which I wasn't able to accompany him to), class parties, the Monster Mash at the boys' school, flu shots and the like.  Like I said, very busy...so much so that I haven't been taking many pictures.

TRAINING
The countdown is on for the Silver Strand Half Marathon the second weekend in November.  Brian and I are looking forward to taking a break from half marathons for a while.  It's not that we don't like racing (okay, maybe only until about mile 10), but we realized that we spent a small fortune on races this year.  BUT, if we find our training slipping, then it's back to the races we go!  Accountability works wonders.

WORK
Speaking of work, I have taken on some part time job responsibilities.  I am working as an independent contractor for a social media consultant, inputting Facebook posts and conducting blogger outreach.  The emphasis is on writing (and following up) and so far it's been fun!  I'm learning a lot, but I think my family is looking forward to me rounding the corner on the learning curve, since I'm spending WAY more time than usual at the computer (and don't think they aren't TOTALLY taking advantage of that).  But, for now, it fills a need for me and gives me a little extra spending money (possibly for the races I mentioned above, since I've missed another work out this week...).

MOTHERHOOD AND OTHER MUSINGS
In addition to my aforementioned job, I have also started a less family-specific and more motherhood-oriented blog called Motherhood and Other Musings.  Feel free to check it out.  If I'm lucky, maybe one day I'll make a few pennies off it.  To boost my viewership, however, I have also been writing articles to submit to mom blogging websites...which is another reason my computer and I have been spending so much time together.

All in all, it's been a super busy fall.  Up next we have basketball for Garrett on the tail of the last few weeks of soccer, time off from school for Thanksgiving (and Thanksgiving itself), and several other things I should probably start planning for...right after I get my calendar updated.  Good think I have the sugar supply from Halloween to keep my going. :)
